I love a good analogy, especially when I can tie two things I really appreciate together. If you drink beer, the next time you take a sip, think about leadership, and drink a toast to yourself.
Beer is typically an acquired taste. I don`t know anyone who really had leadership figured out the first time they were in the position to lead. The complexity and challenges can be daunting. Yet while some people may say in that moment, "leadership isn`t for me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," those who persevere and keep trying will begin to find an initial comfort, and a desire to learn more and lead more.
People often move from simpler beers to more complex ones over time. These different ingredients can make beers more complex in flavor. And generally (though not always) the longer you drink beer, the more likely you are to like or appreciate something more than a basic lager. Leaders who are interested in the craft of leading typically graduate to more advanced techniques and subtle differences in approach as they mature in their roles.
Some people like some beers more than others. I like different beers than I did five or ten years ago. Similarly, different leadership styles will fit different people. As leaders, we must realize that our approach and style will appeal to some people more than others. And just like most all brewers make brew more than one beer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we may need to alter our style to be most effective with different people we lead. There is no perfect leader (or perfect beer).
After I had finished writing these ideas, I put my pen down. But before I closed my journal, I picked up the pen and added one more.
I caught myself humming a tune from my past the other day. It`s an old Tom T. Hall song titled "I Like Beer".

I learned the song long before I ever drank a beer, but now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 35+ years later, I certainly can identify with it. Humming the song makes me a bit thirsty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also gets me thinking and making connections.
Different ingredients make beers different. Ingredients make all the difference in beer – and not just the water. So it is with us as leaders. What inputs you use – the books you read, the seminars you attend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the mentors and coaches you learn from,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all make you different as a leader. If the brewer wants a different flavor or character in the beer, they change the inputs. And if you want to alter your leadership style or skills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you add different inputs too.
Beer is best in moderation. This goes without saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I suppose. But in the case of leaders, we must know when to stop leading and let others go. We must engage people, grow them and when the time is right, let them go. Similarly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is a time to put down the beer. Too much of a good thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is well, too much.
Here are my thoughts, as recorded (first) in my journal.
Just to give you a flavor, here is the second half of the chorus . . .
"Whiskey`s too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka put my mouth in gear. This little refrain, should help me explain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a matter of fact, I like beer."
Different traditions and environments make beers different. Belgian beers are different from the beer brewed in Mexico or Japan. There are differences in process and in the water. In the same way, your background, experiences, character and values make you a different leader from me. And just like Corona (from Mexico) and a Sapporo (from Japan) are both beers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can both lead successfully even if we have different backgrounds and initial inputs.

I recently attended a workshop for small manufacturers to review the process and requirements for ISO certification. Workshops like this are commonplace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I was struck by the composition of the group. One company that stood out in particular was a local manufacturer of cutting tools. By cutting tools I don't mean carbide routing bits that are the cornerstone of the high technology machining industry- I am referring to... scissors!
So, where do small organizations begin? As with most topics there is a wealth of information on the internet and as with most topics some is accurate, and some... not so much. In any event it is a sound starting point to gather information and begin to understand the basic concepts. Bear in mind that any program absolutely requires management's buy-in and support if it is to succeed. After the research, there are manufacturers groups,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on line groups,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and consultants that can be used to varying degrees supply information and start to move the company in the direction that it needs to go. Yes, we are talking about some financial and time investment but we are also talking about the future of your business in which you undoubtedly have a huge sweat equity investment already. From here it's your call; do you get up off the couch and put on the running shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or stay there and grab another (diet) soda?
A very common reaction to this position is that small companies don't have the resources to invest in programs like Lean and Six Sigma and that the return is not as significant as in large companies due to the scale. I'll be the first to admit that this argument does carry some weight, it is a daunting task; however does the fact that you can't get your Bachelor's Degree from Brown University mean that you should avoid getting a degree,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or even learning? The unequivocal answer here is of course not. Since statistics have shown that individuals with degrees overwhelmingly out earn those without,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the investment makes sense even if the institution does not carry the same pedigree. What small businesses need to do is look outside their organization to find resources that they can partner with to effectively expand their capabilities and help train their employees. Whether you are a Fortune 500 Company or a manufacturer with ten people the key to the initiative is to understand the benefit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], begin the process, and leverage the talents of your people to sustain progress. You can't win the race if you don't enter and you won't win the race if you don't train.

The methodology with regard to when a Close takes place, will stand the test of time. In contrast, the ‘Times’ themselves, more specifically, their ability to serve as legitimate example-evidence, have a limited shelf life. Clearly, five years of USA/Iraq history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in tandem with the appearance of the current legitimacy of my ancient article, posted on a spammer’s Blog… had come back to Bite ME!
I’ll admit my intent was to be provocative with the knowledge that anyone could rightly challenge my views, but with one caveat; legitimate criticisms, must be couched within the framework of the ‘time the article was written’ – 2001.

Fast forward to 2008 keeping in mind that George W was wrong in his War in Iraq estimation and think about a VP of Sales who reads my article for the first time and thinks that its content is Current.
Several months ago [May 2008], I receive another angry email, not so courteously written as de Jager’s. In fact, it was downright vitriolic. It came from an American VP of Sales who had read my article “What Successful Sellers Know - Others Don't ... The Subtle Art of Closing” To say the least, he took unkind exception to it.
Going back, minutes after de Jager’s angry email arrived,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so too did a Google Alert informing me a Spam Blogger had reposted my article from 2001. Since there was no reference to when the piece was written, readers – de Jager in particular – were free to assume that it was current, which of course it was not!
It bears repeating: The trouble with the internet is it presents itself wrapped in a cloak of timely-legitimacy regardless of the time in which it is read. Or to quote Copi again, “In real life, context is critical”.
In the article, I compared this type of thinking to what ultimately led to the many ‘Red-Faced’ futurists who got Y2K all wrong and the now historic Dot-Com meltdown. The article,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mentioned Peter de Jager for the simple fact that in 2001, he was the Y2K icon for the ‘time’. He was also a political Y2K lightning rod whether one believed in him or not.
At the risk of sounding like a ‘de Jager sycophant’ the point of this article is not to aggrandize him but rather to address why I received an angry email from this man whom I respect.
However, in the year that followed, there was no shortage of de Jager-detractors who, in light of the calm that Y2K ushered in, were all too eager to publicly vilify him. Why? Because the potential pandemic disaster everybody got ready for never materialized. Instead of receiving thanks for his services,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], agenda-driven hindsight-specialists castigated him in all medias for causing the world to spend $Billions on what they deemed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unneeded, upgraded, computer systems.
I used this example to illustrate that the success of the mission could not be measured in the few days of fighting but rather the many months of preparations by ‘Special-Ops’ forces that worked behind the lines – ahead of time - ensuring the strategy was victorious. It certainly fit with the core message of my article which was, in sales, the success of the sale is often predicated on the quality of the Close which starts with preparation at the beginning of the sales process, not the End.
In 2001, I wrote an article entitled “Chicken Little and the new Disintermediation Myth!” I likened Chicken Little to those at the time, prophesying the belief that thanks to the internet and global fulfillment, the middleman on the streets and channels [resellers] would become extinct. My opinion then was, it wasn’t going to happen. So far, nearly a decade later, I have been proven correct.
The article stated that most sellers think the Close takes place at the End of the sale but in fact, successful sellers know the Close can often start even before a contact with the customer.
The unbridled nature of the internet has its strengths and weaknesses. One being, it exists in a perpetual state of recent authenticity. It would bode well for readers and bloggers alike to temper their interpretations until they can time-frame the context or circumstances in which the editorial / blog was written.

I likened this strategy to what was going on in the world at that time. History has vindicated de Jager but to date, he has never received the recognition he so rightly deserves. His service to the world extends far beyond Y2K. For example, on 9/11 when the towers came down, companies like Cantor Fitzgerald [a large Bond Company],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], were back in business within 24 hours, despite the total loss of their entire computer network. They can thank,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in part, Peter de Jager for the impact he had on the corporate world in his pre-Y2K recommendations that clearly demonstrated the importance of ‘backing up all data’ at mirror sites: in Cantor Fitzgerald’s case, New Jersey.
I received an angry email the other day from Peter de Jager. For those who may have forgotten, Peter was [and still is] a respected international Speaker/Author and Computer guru. In the late 1990s, he enlightened the world as to the dangers of Y2K and warned that when the clock struck 12AM 2000, computers better be prepared to adapt to the next millennium. If not, the potential global consequences could be dire.
Ironically, this, for me, was not an isolated incident.
